Disclaimer: Alas the Torchwood and Doctor Who characters are not mine, they belong to other more fabulous people.
Un-beta'ed, sorry. Any and all mistakes are my own (i'm known as the typo queen around friends), and i apologize for them.
Authors Ramble: Okay so i wrote this mostly because i was bored, and i wanted to do something with the new and all knowing Rose. So basically this is just my take on her and just one part of her day as she slipped in between her world and Donna's. Of course i based it around Jack because he's fab, and i always liked the friendship that he and Rose had. So i thought it'd be cute, and i honestly didn't mean for it to become so Janto centric but of course it did because i can't help myself lol. And honestly, i think i may have an obsession with killing poor Ianto off early on in my stories only to change my mind later lol. Yes, i'm crazy. Anyway, enjoy.
Summary: When Jack was faced with what he was sure would be his actual death, a small gap in between his world and another seemed to have different plans for him. Which lead him to a reunion he hadn't expected.
Rose: We're getting choked by gas.
Donna: Can't anyone stop it?
Rose: Yeah, they're trying right now. This little band of fighters, on board the Sontaran ship. Any second now... (the sky is set ablaze)
Donna: And that was?
Rose: That was the Torchwood team. Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, they gave their lives. Captain Jack Harkness is transported to the Sontaran home world, there's no one left.
Jack, Gwen and Ianto were standing in the middle of the Sontaran ship, the destruction of earth seemingly inevitable. They were back to back, creating a tiny three man circle. The Sontarans surrounded them, completely indifferent toward the atmospheric converter that stood at Jack's feet, the remote to it in his hand.
"Jack." Gwen hissed, sounding suddenly unsure. He understood her uncertainty, there were quite a ways away from the teleport they has used to infiltrate the ship with. And with the seconds quickly ticking away, their outcome was looking more and more grim. Even Jack was doubtful that he'd be able to survive an explosion of the magnitude they had planed, and it was blatantly obvious that neither Ianto or Gwen would survive.
"Jack!" Gwen hissed again.
Glaring at the smug face of General Staal, Jack clenched his teeth. "We're not getting out of here." He ground out softly, hearing Gwen's breath hitch from beside him on his right.
"Do it." Ianto whispered, yet his voice sounded so sure.
Looking over his left shoulder Jack stared at Ianto, who in turn just stared right back. Their blue eyes burning into one another in a silent goodbye.
Turning his attention back to the chanting Sontarans, Jack surveyed the group of aliens with disdain.
"Go to hell." He said, pressing the button on the remote to activate the converter to ignite both the ship and the sky, burning up the ATMOS gas. As he pressed the button he felt Ianto's hand grip the back of his large coat, he also heard Gwen's choked sob of her husband's name.
Just as Jack felt the fist split seconds of the powerful blast hit him and his team, there was and odd tingle that ran through his body. "NO!" Jack screamed as he watched his surroundings fade away, the sounds of his team's painful yells ringing in his ears horribly.
The captain landed with a rather sickening sounding thud in the middle of a large scarcely lit white room, his hands and knees coming into contact roughly with the hard tiled floor. It only took him a moment to catch his breath before he slammed his fist against the floor in frustration. "FUCK!" He yelled, the guilt and anguish of losing the rest of his team crashing over him in an unforgiving wave. It was that reason that he didn't notice the group of people dressed in black subterfuge gear surround him, but at the sound of about fifteen guns cock his head snapped up.
Jack groaned in annoyance when he caught sight of the masked soldiers. "This just isn't my day." He muttered, before standing up slowly, the tears he had been so willing to let fall seconds before still shone in his eyes.
He stood before his captors defiantly, or as defiantly as he could look what with his depressed expression and burnt clothing.
"Hold your fire!" A voice rang out from the sea of masked faces. "Hold your fire!" The person speaking emerged from the group of soldiers, stepping past the armed people and into the circle that they had created around Jack. "Stand down." The person said, yanking their mask off to reveal none other than Mickey Smith.
"He's a friendly?" Another asked.
"Sometimes too friendly." Mickey said with a lop sided smile, staring at Jack who in turn looked horribly dumbfounded.
"You heard the man." Another pulled their mask off, revealing a blonde spiky haired young man. "Stand down!" He ordered, the rest quickly lowering their weapons.
"Captain." Mickey said with a nod.
"Mickey Smith." Jack said with a mixture or confusion and awe, which he quickly got over when he snapped. "What the hell is going on here!?"
Ignoring Jack's demanding question, Mickey turned his attention to the rest of the team who were now all unmasked. "I'll take care of it, you're dismissed." He told the group of people, none of which moved.
"You heard your Executive Officer, dismissed!" The blonde man snapped loudly.
At that the group started to file out of the room, all tossing glances over their shoulders at Mickey and the new comer.
"Wilson!" Mickey called out, causing a red headed woman to stop. "When she gets back, tell her she's needed." The woman nodded before exiting, leaving the three men alone.
"Honestly, i get no respect anymore." Mickey muttered, rubbing his brow.
The blonde man chuckled, walking up behind Mickey and placing a hand on his shoulder. "It's my fault, i shouldn't have called you baby in front of everyone."
"Ya think!?" Mickey quipped.
Jack cleaned his throat, reminding the two that he was, in fact, still standing there.
"Sorry. Hi, i'm Jake Simmonds." Jake introduced himself with a smile.
"Captain Jack Harkness." Jack's reply held none of his usual innuendo or flirtatious charm to it. "Now someone what to tell me what's going on here?"
"I'll do it." A female voice came from the doorway, the three men all turning to look toward it. "Hello Jack." Rose smiled sadly at him.
"Rose" Jack breathed, barely believing his eyes. There, in the door stood Rose Tyler. As beautiful and perfect as ever, just as he remembered her.
Rose made her way into the room, stopping in front of Jack. "Jack, i'm so sorry about your team." She told him softly.
Jack didn't know whether he wanted to cry or laugh, both seeming so very absurd right then. So instead he just pulled her into a tight hug, the tears quietly slipping down his cheeks from both his grief and happiness going unnoticed.
"It's so good to see you!" He exclaimed, lifting her up off the ground a bit. Rose laughed, hugging him back.
Once Jack set her back down, she smiled at him as she straightened her purple leather jacket. "It's good to see you too Jack, it's nice to see a friendly face for once."
"What's going on Rose? I thought you were dead, your name was on the list of the people lost in the battle of Canary Wharf." Jack said, absentmindedly brushing a few stay tears from his face.
Rose didn't answer right away, instead she seemed like she was debating what to say. "Why don't we go sit down?" She tilted her head toward a desk that sat against one of the walls.
Jack looked around, finally taking in his surroundings. They were in a large, rather sterile looking white room. It barely had anything in it, just a few beaten up looking desks and chairs. "Are we in a storage room?" He asked, noting Rose motion to the door with a nod of her head. Mickey and Jake both in turn nodded silently and left the room, Jack saw through the partially open door the two men take guard. "Good little guards you've got there."
Rose just shrugged. "It's their job."
"So, are you ever going to answer any of my questions?" Jack asked, sitting heavily in an old looking chair.
"Yes, it's a storage room." She said, leaning against a near by desk.
"Not the question i meant." Jack said dryly.
Rose just chuckled. "We're in Torchwood One, in the basement to be exact."
"That's impossible, Torchwood One's gone. I should know, i scavenged the wreckage with my team. "
"Maybe on your world One's gone, but here it's alive and kicking."
"What do you mean 'my world'?" Jack asked.
"This is a parallel world." Rose said, holding her arms out to indicate where they were. "I didn't die in the battle, i was pulled into a parallel universe and trapped. So was Mickey and my mum, well technically Mickey chose to stay. But that's not important." She waved off that bit of her story. "You know all this Jack, or at least you knew all this."
"How could i have possibly known this?"
"The Doctor told you, when you went traveling with him and Martha."
"Martha?" Jack looked at Rose like she had grown a second head. "Rose the last time i saw the Doctor, i was with you. We were on Satellite Five, you left me behind." He gave her a little annoyed look at the mention of being left behind.
Rose cringed inwardly. "Yeah sorry about that, and the whole immortal thing too."
"Wait, you did that?"
"Yeah, it was a thing." She gestured vaguely. "The Time Vortex, god like powers, ya know." She shrugged.
"Oh, so just the usual." Jack smirked.
"Pretty much." Rose laughed.
"Okay, wait. Back to the parallel world issue, why am i here?" Jack asked, he honestly knew nothing about parallel universes. Time travel, aliens, the whole of Earth's history, sure. But parallel worlds, that was a new one even for him.
"Yeah, i don't really know." Rose said idly, looking a little confused. She was still getting use to having to have all the answers, it made her appreciate the Doctor and his profound knowledge all the more. "You're suppose to be on the Sontaran home world right now, no doubt being tortured."
"Fun." Jack quipped.
"Yeah. It must have something to do with me, i have been jumping between worlds quite a bit today."
Jack raised an eyebrow at that.
"Hey it's not me doing this though." Rose assured him quickly. "The barriers are breaking down anyway, i'm just slipping in and out ever so often. But you're not the first one to get misplaced here, hence the tactical team welcome. A few of our guest have been... shall we say, hostile." She explained.
Jack was looking at her oddly, regarding her with searching eyes.
"What?" Rose asked.
"Nothing, it's just... Okay don't take this the wrong way or anything but, did you take like an instant Time Lord pill with your breakfast this morning or something?"
Rose laughed, shaking her head.
"No, it's the Time Vortex. It's still got a connection with me, so when the Doctor died it kinda kick started again. I guess with him gone someone needed to see the whole of time and space, and that someone was me."
"How long have you been like this?"
"About a day."
"A day?"
"Give or take a couple of hours."
"Rose, the Doctor has been dead for two years." Jack told her.
"Oh Jack, lets not get into timelines 'kay? It'll just cause a headache. Just trust me when i tell you that i am working on fixing it, all i need is a couple more hours."
"Rose, there are some things you can't fix." Jack said mournfully.
"You mean Ianto and Gwen?"
"Yes." Jack said tightly, getting up from his seat and walking away from Rose a bit.
She quickly pushed away from the desk and followed him into the middle of the room. "Jack, please don't mourn them." She said softly.
"Don't mourn them?" Jack turned to face her, unable to believe what she was asking of him. "They were my friends, they were my family.... he was...." Jack trailed off, tears welling up in his eyes yet again.
"You love him don't you?"
"Yeah i do, and i never got to tell him. Never got to tell him that he was more than just a suit, that he was so much more. He was brilliant and beautiful, and so much better than me. Everything he did, he did out of love. Even the bad things, he did because of love." Jack shook his head, fighting back his emotions. "So don't tell me not to mourn him." His voice wavered as he spoke.
Rose watched Jack with sympathetic eyes, her heart breaking for him. The loss of his team was bad enough, they were his friend. But the loss of a lover, a lover that never knew how he felt. That was something Rose understood, she knew the pain of words not spoken all too well. She still dreamed about the Doctor's face fading from her view, taking with him those three words she longed to hear more than anything in the world.
"Listen to me Jack." Rose felt suddenly determined. Her work with Donna was no longer just about saving the world from the oncoming threat, it was about so much more. It was about keeping the people she loved from feeling the pain of loss, to keep them from hurting. "I am going to get Gwen and Ianto back for you, i am going to get him back for you. Something in your world went horribly wrong and the Doctor died when he wasn't suppose to, but i know someone who can fix it. And dammit, i am going to get her to fix it."
Jack stared at Rose before smiling at her, her words for some reason easing the pain in his heart slightly. "You're not longer that kid i knew."
Rose just chuckled.
"I love you, you know that." Jack told her.
"I know." They both laughed softly before Rose's watched beeped, causing her to look down at it. "Oh great." She muttered. "Mickey! Jake!" She called to the two men, causing them to enter the room again.
"Time?" Mickey questioned.
"Yeah." Rose nodded, looking down at herself with a little sigh. "I wish i had worn a better jacket, it's bloody well cold there."
"Fashion before function babe." Jake quipped with a laugh.
"Don't i know it." Rose smiled before turning her attention back to Jack. "Okay, well this is goodbye."
"Goodbye? What, i'm not going to see you again?"
"Well, if everything goes according to plan, no. Not here at least. You'll wake up and all this will be nothing more than a distant dream."
The two friends hugged once again, sharing a chaste kiss before breaking apart. Jack watched as Rose backed up away from him, standing just out of reach.
"Oh and Jack, when you see Ianto again. Make sure you tell him you're in love with him, i'd hate to see you regret not telling him twice."
"Why do i get the feeling you're not telling me everything?" Jack asked with a little questioning look.
Rose just smiled a cryptic little smile as she faded into thin air.
"Wha.." Jack paused. "Okay, that was either the smoothest teleport i've ever seen, or she just faded out of existence."
"Yeah, she does that." Jake said. "She can't exist in both worlds at once since there's only one of her, there was no parallel Rose. Well, unless you count the Yorkie."
"Which, we don't." Mickey added quickly.
"At least not in front of her." Jake said with a laugh, causing Mickey to chuckle.
"So basically she just sorts fades in and out of each world." Mickey finished the other man's explanation.
Jack nodded, suddenly feeling like perhaps his own timeline wasn't the most confusing thing on the planet. At least he didn't have to deal with the issues of a parallel world.
Before anyone got a chance to say anything else, Jake's com went off, causing the blonde to press his ear piece. "Simmonds." He listened to the person on the other end. "Right, i'm on my way." He said before clicking the com off.
"Problems?" Mickey questioned.
"More guests."
"Hostile?"
"Extremely."
"Need help?" Mickey asked, he was after all part of the tactical team. It was only right that he help them with the threat.
Jake looked at Jack for a moment, contemplating whether it was right to ask Mickey to leave the good looking older man to his own accord and help with the mission. "Uh, no. Why don't you stay with Jack until he dissipates, shouldn't take long."
"Dissipates?" Jack said, not exactly liking the sound of that. He didn't think he had ever dissipated before.
"Oh don't worry, that's just our term for it. You'll do pretty much what Rose just did." Jake assured him. "Well Captain." He shook Jack's hand. "It was nice meeting you, and hopefully we'll see each other again."
"Likewise." Jack smiled.
"I'll see you at home?" Jake asked Mickey.
"Yep." Mickey nodded.
"Okay, i'll see you." The two men kissed quickly before Jake went jogging out of the room.
"Be careful!" Mickey called after him. When he turned his attention back Jack, he found the older man watching him with amused eyes. "What?"
"Well well, Mickey Smith. I didn't think you had it in ya." Jack teased, slapping the other man's cheek much like he did when they first met.
"Oh bite me."
"Hey i can see it, i'd fall for him too. He's hot." Jack smirked, teasing Mickey completely.
"Oi, watch it there mate. Hands off."
"I never said i'd use my hands." Jack quipped with a chuckle.
Mickey rolled his eyes, snorting. "You never change."
"Nope." Jack grinned brightly.
"You're right, you're still just as cheesy."
"Yeah, well...."
Jack suddenly woke with a start, his whole body jerking awake. He looked around the darkened room, it was barely even dawn. "I could have sworn." He muttered softly, feeling someone stir next to him. It was then that he realized that he was in Ianto's bed, the man in question laying next to him.
"What's wrong Jack?" Ianto asked in a sleepy voice as she rolled over to face the other man.
"Nothing." Jack said softly, staring up at the ceiling. "Just a weird dream."
"Nightmare?" Ianto questioned from where he laid, looking at Jack through the darkness of the room.
"I don't know, it was like i was really sad but really happy at the same time. It was odd."
"Well it was just a dream, you're fine now."
"Yeah, i guess." Jack said, rolling over onto his side. He felt Ianto curl up against his back, wrapping an arm loosely around his waist as he spooned with him. Jack closed his eyes, willing sleep to come when he saw Rose in his minds eye. "Rose." He whispered.
"What about her?" Ianto asked, his breath ghosting across the back of Jack's neck.
"I think she was in my dream."
"Well that explains the mixed feelings. You were happy to see her in your dream, but sad that she's still trapped."
"I suppose.... It was just so real, and...." He paused, her voice ringing clearly in his mind. 'When you see Ianto again. Make sure you tell him you're in love with him.'
"Ianto?"
The Welshman hummed sleepily in response.
"I'm in love with you." Following Jack's confession, there was a silence that hung in the air that made the older man wonder if Ianto had already fallen back to sleep.
"I'm in love with you too." Ianto replied softly after a few moments.
Jack smiled, threading his hand with the one Ianto had draped against his waist.
The two men slipped into a blissful and rather contented sleep, Ianto pressed firmly against Jack. Neither one of them aware of the darkness that was at that very moment stretching across the heavens, about the shatter their perfect moment to bits.
Comments are love. Love it? Hate it? Let me know ^_^
