All in a day's work 1/1
Title: All in a days work
Part: 1/1
Word Count: 1,282 (although WP tends to be off by a couple numbers usually)
Characters: Shaun, Zach, Cody
Pairings: Shaun/Zach
Rating: PG
Genre: Fluffly romance.
Warning: Takes place a year after the movie ended, so it helps if you've seen the movie.
Disclaimer: The movie, characters and actors are not mine. Which is rather disappointing.

Un-beta'ed, sorry. Any and all mistakes are my own (i'm known as the typo queen around friends), and i apologize for them.

Author's Note: Written for the Multifandom Drabble Meme, prompt was "A typical day". It's may not be an exact "typical" day because of where it went at the end there. But it started out rather typical lol, oh well, i tried. This was also my first time writing Zach/Shaun. Although they are one of my OTP's, i tend to stay more in the Torchwood/Doctor Who fandom when it comes to writing fics. So forgive me if it suuuccckkkksss! Lol

Summary: The boys have been together for a year now, and are living their lives one day at a time.

Zach groaned in a tired manner as he rolled over, stretching his arm out across the bed only to feel a cool area where he would normally find his lover sleeping peacefully. Groggily he cracked one eye opened and saw that he was in fact alone in bed, which was fine with him, just meant he could get a bit more shut eye in. As he rolled over with the plan of going back to sleep, he heard the sound of laughing and to some extent, giggling, coming from somewhere else in the house. With a little chuckle and a sleepy smirk, it took him about a minute to decide that he would have to get up and investigate the noises he heard.

Zach just shook his head fondly as he walked into the kitchen of the condo that he shared with his lover and young nephew Cody. “What are you two doing?” He asked with a chuckle in his voice.

Both Shaun and Cody looked up at him, smiles on their faces. “Oh hi!” Shaun said.
“Dad!” Cody piped up happily. “We’re making pancakes!” The young boy said cheerfully. Cody had given up on calling Zach ‘uncle’ six months after they had moved in with Shaun, which was fine. Cody had always insisted that Zach was his father, because in a way, he was. He had always been the one to look after the child, even when Cody’s mother was still around.

“I can see that.” Zach laughed, walking over to where Cody was sat on the counter across from Shaun, who was carefully placing very oddly shaped pancakes on plates. “You look like you got more batter on yourself than in the pan though.” Zach commented as he attempted to brush powdered pancake mix off of Cody’s face.

“Yeah, we had some trouble with the mix for a minute there.” Shaun said, as he walked over and placed the food on the table. “Come on buddy, come eat.” He said to Cody, who jumped off the counter, with a little help from Zach of course, and went to the table.

Shaun moved to pull Zach into his arms, kissing him lightly. “Sorry to wake you, we weren’t planning on it”

“It’s fine.” Zach assured him.

“I was planning on letting you sleep in since you don’t have your exam until later this morning, and what with all the studying you’ve been doing....” He was cut off when Zach put a finger up to shush him.

“It’s fine” Zach said again, kissing the older man.

“Ew.” Cody’s small voice cut in, followed by a giggle.

“Ew?” Zach raised his eyebrows at the child who was beaming at the two men from where he was sitting at the table. “What’s ew?”

“Kissing.” Cody said with another giggle, which in turn caused both men to chuckle.

“Oh to be six years old again.” Shaun said, looking at the clock. “Okay dude.” He said to the youngster. “It’s almost time to leave, go wash your face and put on your shoes.”

“Don’t forget socks this time!” Zach called after the quickly retreating form of Cody as he ran toward his room for his shoes.

“Want us to come pick you up after your exam?” Shaun asked Zach, hugging his lover tightly against his body.

“Sure.”

“Really?” Shaun looked a little surprised.

“Yeah.” Zach nodded.

Although the two men were in no way still in the closet, Zach also didn’t parade his sexuality around either. Which was fine with Shaun, there was no reason for anyone to know what was going on in Zach’s life beside them. Which was why Shaun had never picked Zach up from campus, not wanting accidently ‘out’ his partner to his friends. But after living together for over a year, not to mention raising a child together, it seemed Zach no longer cared about his lover staying away from campus.

“Okay.” Shaun nodded, smiling. “We’ll pick you up after Cody gets out of school at lunch.” As if on cue, the child in question came barreling down toward the two men.

“Okay! I’m ready.” The little boy said, slugging his small backpack over his shoulders. He didn’t really need to have a bag, being in kindergarten didn’t exactly entail much homework, but Cody had wanted a backpack so they bought him one. Like Shaun always said, little kids deserved to be spoiled.

“Bye kid.” Zach said, mussing Cody’s hair a little.

“Bye dad!” He said loudly as he ran out the front door, hollering back “I’ll start the car!” as he grabbed Shaun’s keys off of the table by the entrance.

“I better go before he attempts to drive away.” Shaun joked, pausing to kiss Zach once more. “I’ll see you later.”

“Bye.” Zach said with a content smile on his face, holding his hand up in a little wave as he watched Shaun chase Cody down the hall toward the elevator.

Zach was standing outside the building where his class had been, placing a couple things in his bag when someone almost jumped on his back. “Christ!” He said as he quickly whirled around to find a blond man his age standing there. “Dude you scared the living shit out of me.” He said, punching the man in the chest.

“Ow!” The blonde laughed, rubbing where he had be punched.

“I do believe that was the desired effect.” A girl said as she and a few others walked up to where the two where standing. “Mike’s always trying to jump someone’s bones, I think it’s because he’s such a lonely loser.” She said sarcastically.

“Bite it.” Mike told the girl, turning back to Zach. “Okay, so we’re all going to go and grab a bite to eat. You in?”

Zach just looked at his friends. “Uh....”

“Come on, in? Out? In-out?” Mike pressured.

“Nah man, I’ve got shit to do.” Zach said as he picked up his bag and started to walk away.

“You always have shit to do.” The girl said as she and the rest followed.

“Yeah, Elle’s right ya know.” Mike said, swooping the girl up and over his shoulder into a firefighters hold. “You never want to hang. What’s up with that?”

“Nothing’s up, I’ve just got....” He was quickly cut off by one of his friends.

“Shit to do, yeah, heard it.”

“Dude, you just fricking aced your exam. Come celebrate.”

Zach stopped walking, a bright smile spreading across his face. “You’re right, I should celebrate. And I will, at home.” He said, looking over his shoulder to his group of classmates. “I’ve gotta go.” He said, taking off in a jog.

“Wait! Zach! What the hell’s at home?” Mark called after him, placing the girl in his arms down on the ground once again.

Zach stopped, turning to look back at his friends. “My kid.” He paused, beaming. “And a gorgeous man.” With a wave, he took off toward the car where Shaun and Cody were standing waiting for him. He didn’t even notice the surprised looks on his friends faces as he scooped Cody up into his arms and greeted Shaun with a kiss.

“Hey.” Shaun said with a smile, one of his hands resting comfortably in the small of Zach’s back. “I think you may have surprised a few of your friends.” He teased, seeing the group of people that Zach had just been talking to watching them.

Zach just shrugged, placing Cody back onto the ground so the child could climb back into the car. “It’s all in a days work.” Zach quipped, pulling Shaun into a deep kiss. “Lets go home.” He said once they parted, arms still around one another.

“Yes, lets.” Shaun agreed, smiling.

Love it! :) Are you going to write a sequel? I can see a story with him not telling his friends. Nice job!! The only thing to point out is that Cody would probably be 6 by now, but otherwise no quibbles here. ;)

Hey, thanks for the heads up about Cody's age. I couldn't for the life of me remember if he was four or five in the movie when i was writing the fic, so i just took a guess. Looks like i was wrong, oh well :)

As for a sequel, i'm actually thinking of it. The moment i finished this one, i knew that there was still so much story to be told. So, yes, there's most likely going to be a sequel in the near future.

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!1111 THIS WAS SO ADORABLE. i loved their voices (AND CODY <333333333333333, which is what my prompt was originally going to be, but that was asking more for a third character than a prompt which would have been totally unfair!) and i loved what you did with it and how atypical a day this is EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS SO MUNDANE AND PLAUSIBLE. nnnnngh, those are my boys! i heart it so much! tysm for writing it for me! ♥

I really like this and I'm happy whenever I see a Shelter fic because they're still a rare gem. It was fun to see Zach shocking his friends.
I'd give up everything, just to be with you.: needyoucloser[info]xrazorbladesky on May 4th, 2009 07:14 pm (UTC)
