I Need You Safe - 7/??
Series: I need you safe
Part: Seven
Word Count: 1674
Characters: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, mentions of the team, OC's
Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Gwen/Rhys, Martha/Tom
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Angst! AU!
Warning: Spoilers for Exit Wounds and the whole of the second series.
Disclaimer: Alas the Torchwood character's are not mine, they belong to other more fabulous people. Which makes me sad. The OC's are all my creations though, not that i wouldn't share them with RTD. 'Cause i so would ^_^

Un-beta'ed, sorry. Any and all mistakes are my own (i'm known as the typo queen around friends), and i apologize for them.

Author's Note: Are you seeing things!? Three posts in one day? No way! Yeah, see this is what happens when i'm trying to take my mind off my impending hospital trip on Friday. So from my nerves comes more fic, enjoy!

Summary: Jack takes desperate measures to assure his remaining staff is safe, which leaves him with a new team who are experiencing a VERY different side of Jack. Now it's up to one of his closest friends to try and straighten things out.

Martha was sitting in the conference room the next day when she finally saw Jack again, their little computer tug of war not withstanding. She was tapping her pen against her wedding ring as she stared off into space, trying to think of what to do about Ianto.

"Martha." Jack said with false cheer, starting the woman out of her thoughts.

"Jack." She said, looking up at him as he stood over her in a way that could only be described as 'towering'. The stance would have unnerved anyone else, but not her.

"I didn't see much of you yesterday." He said conversationally, crossing his arms over his chest.

"You didn't? Hmm, you must have been very busy." She said with a smile, metaphorically dancing around Jack the way he was dancing around her.

"Yes, i was having trouble with my computer."

"Oh, that's too bad. Maybe you should call in some tech support. Or i know, better yet. Stay out of my business." She glared at him.

"I hardly think whatever you were doing could be called 'your business'." He said with a disbelieving snort.

"How would you know?" Martha quipped, gathering up her things from the table as she spoke. "It's not like you actually got a chance to see what i was doing." She smirked.

"Yes, you're good." Jack muttered.

"Yeah, i know." She chuckled before leaving the room.

"Martha! Wait!" He called after her, following the woman from the room.

"Yes?" She turned to face him.

"What are you trying to prove?" He asked in a defeated tone. "Really, why are you doing this?"

"Because Jack, you need to remember how to be human again." She told him simply.

"I am human." He argued.

"Then you might try acting like one."

"I do."

"Oh yeah?" She arched an eyebrow. "Try telling your team that."

"What's the suppose to mean?"

Instead of answering, Martha suddenly stood every straight, doing a little stomping movement. "Sir, yes sir! Whatever you say, Captain sir!" She finished with a mock salute.

Jack just watched her in an unimpressed way. "Funny."

"I thought so. Now if you'll excuse me, i must go continue plodding along with the rest of the drudges."

Jack just shook his head at her as she left, she was completely and wholly infuriating. Yet he still loved her, and secretly found the fact that she was persistent with him rather sweet. But neither of those facts took away from the want to wring her neck for being such a pain in the ass.

"Hello Martha." Nareesh greeted the doctor as she entered the main level of the hub after her run in with Jack.

"Hey Nareesh." Martha said distractedly.

"Is something wrong?"

"Huh? Oh no, i'm just thinking."

"Has it got something to do with Jack?" Nareesh asked, standing next to the other woman.

"Yes, why?"

"No reason really, i was just curious as to how he was doing."

Martha looked at the archivist oddly, arching an eyebrow at her. "You care about how he is?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Nareesh shrugged. "Because if i don't, no one else will. Especially not around here." She said simply, moving to sit at her workstation.

Martha just stared at the woman for a moment, seeing her in a new light. Perhaps there was more to the team than just their loyalty to Jack, maybe Martha had been wrong in thinking that they had no attachment to the Captain. Just because Jack refused to get attached to the team, didn't mean that they weren't growing attached to him.

"Nareesh." Martha said, an idea striking her. "You're the tech support here right?"

"To a point, but if you really need help i suggest you ask Collin. He's the genius, not me."

Martha chuckled. "Don't sell yourself short, you're just the person i need."

And hour later, Martha was sitting in the tourist office reading over some documents Nareesh had found for her. As it turned out, she had been the right person for Martha to turn to for help.
After a quick yet vague explanation as to why she need to find her 'old friend', Nareesh managed to pull up more on Ianto from simple public record then Martha had been able to find by hacking into closed documents. That made Martha think that perhaps all her UNIT training wasn't as helpful as she had thought, in the end it had only clouded her from seeing the obvious.

It seemed that the reason Ianto hadn't been listed in the telephone records was because he lived with a roommate, a woman by the name of Lily. And everything was under her name, the phone, the lease, everything. Which was something Martha hadn't even considered.

When she had found the witness statement from Ianto, apparently he had seen a mugging take place. Martha had checked the name on the lease of the flat that Ianto had put down as his place of address, and had seen that it wasn't Jones. She had just assumed that he had moved between the time the statement was taken and when she had found it. And when she had tracked down the cell phone number he had given the police, it only lead to a canceled number. But that didn't stop her from feeling daft for not looking more closely into the address, but to be fair she did have her mind on other things. Like Jack and his incessant attempts to spy on her, which was really starting to get less and less amusing with each passing day.

The one thing the two women hadn't bee able to find, was any fixed employment record. It seemed that young Ianto was a bit of a job drifter, never staying in one field for too long. That struck Martha as odd, he had never seemed the slacker type. And yet there he was, bouncing around from one place of employment to another.
Nareesh managed to find one of his resignations, from when he had worked in a library for about two months. Under the area where it asked to state the reason for the job departure, Ianto had put 'it just doesn't feel right'.

That made Martha's heart ache, Ianto was lost. His whole life had been all about Torchwood for so many years, that without it, he didn't know what to do with himself. And what was worse, was that he had no memory as to why he felt so displaced in the world. The very thought of what the man must have been going through made her hate Jack right then, it had taken all her strength not to hit him when she saw him. Instead she volunteered to watch the tourist office when Emma made a coffee run, much to the surprise to the others. When they questioned Martha as to why she'd be willing to sit up in the dusty old office, she just muttered something about the Hub being suffocating before stomping off.

Even with the time spent alone in the tourist office, Martha was still fuming. So much so, that she didn't notice Emma return and place a large cup of coffee in front of her.

"Martha." Emma said softly, touching the other woman's shoulder.

"Huh, what?" Martha said quickly, looking up from the print outs she had gotten from Nareesh.

"Your coffee." Emma pointed at the cup. "Oh, and here." She said, pulling a small cardboard box out of a bag and placing it next to the cup. "I thought you could use a pick me up, you looked a little down. It's chocolate, the best cake this side of the galaxy. I promise you." Emma smiled sweetly. "I usually have a piece when i'm feeling particularly crappy, always makes me feel better."

Martha smiled brightly at the young woman. "Thanks Emma, that's really sweet."

Emma just shrugged before turning to enter the Hub with the drinks for the rest of the staff, pausing a moment, she quickly faced Martha again. "Martha, what you're doing with Jack. I know i'm just the receptionist, i'm no Collin or Nareesh. But i'm good with people and a fast talker, so if you ever need help with whatever you're looking for, i'd be willing to give you a hand."

"Thanks Em, i'll keep that in mind. Who knows, maybe you'll be able to find Ianto."

"Ianto?"

"Yeah, that's who i'm looking for. A man named Ianto Jones, he's a friend."

Emma looked puzzled for a moment. "You mean the guy who works at the Coffee Bean?" The blonde jabbed her thumb in the directions of the front door.

"What!?" Martha snapped. No, it couldn't be, it wouldn't be. Things like that only happened in the movies, not real life. But then again, secret underground alien catching organizations didn't exist in real life either, and yet she was sitting in the front office of one.

"Yeah, the little shop just down the way. You've been there a couple of times, that's where you spent the afternoon with my laptop. There's a bloke there, new guy. Been there a couple of days, card on his chest says 'Ianto Jones'. Tall, blue eyes, kinda cute. Makes a mean cup of coffee."

Martha just stared at Emma for a minute before letting out a breathy, disbelieving laugh. "Talk about your six degrees of separation." She muttered.

"What?" Emma asked.

"Nothing." She shook her head. "Emma!" Martha beamed. "I love you! I so owe you one, i owe you a million ones!" She said excitedly, pulling the younger woman into a quick hug.

Emma just giggled at Martha's antics. "Glad i could help."

"Oh you did! Trust me, you so did. Gotta go!" And just like that, Martha abruptly went running out the front door and into the rainy afternoon air.

"That girl is completely bonkers." Emma muttered to herself as she made her way into the Hub, smiling that she had finally been able to help with something besides answering phones. Even thought she wasn't exactly sure what that 'something' was, at least, not yet.

I loved her taking Emma's computer and freezing Jack out, and I loved her annoying the pants off of him. She is just a riot...and now...we're about to find Ianto WHOOOOOT! I didn't realize there was an reference to a '93 movie in this chapter, so that's news to me as well lol. But the 80's quote in the last chapter was from the tv show A-Team, i'm a huge dorky fan of it.

I'm glad your liking the fic so far, i was so not sure about this one when i was writing it. I'm glad that apparently i was wrong ^_^

And yes, the visit went alright. Thanks for asking :D

Wow! This story is incredible. :) The first chapter had me in tears, and then for a while I just felt so sad for Jack. Hearing about Gwen and Rhys' baby was so sweet.
Now, I'm full of hope and a bit of worry about what's going to happen next.
I can't wait to see where you go with this. Thanks for sharing it. :)
